FULL THROTTLE ON ZERO HUNGER
The latest report by the United Nations regarding the Human Development Index, recently divulged, shows that Brazil, through thick and thin, keep on changing.
The country is still among the most unqual in the world, but has improved. Since the
UN started measuring the HDI, in 1975, Brazil has climbed 16 positions. Right not, it sits at 65th. A decent leap, but much more is needed.
The reading of the report shows that the country still depend, and very much so, on strategic initiatives, in the medium and long term, to make it grow once more. But while the government, with the partnership of creative, patriotical businessmen, tries to find the best way to forge ahead, total dedication is requires to urgent problems.
The fight against hunger is one of them. The main one, in fact. Therefore, the 'Fome Zero' program needs full power. The program, which some opposing voices qualify as demagoguery, actually deserves praise. The UN itself, in its HDI report, spares no compliments in describing it. It portrays the initiative as one of the most important of its kind in the world in fighting poverty – one of the eight goals it seeks to fulfill until 2015, along with the reduction of child mortality and the achievement of better quality at basic schooling.
For the first time in brazilian history, a program toward this goal innovates while reuniting people with resources (mainly businessmen) with the larger portion of brazilian population that needs help. Thousands of families, in the distant reaches of the country and along the periphery of urban centers. The NGO 'Apoio ao Fome Zero' (Support for Zero Hunger), presided by the first lady Marisa Letícia Lula da Silva, is the gateway for new contributions. Hands to the task, gentlemen.
